Augmentative & Alternative Communication ( AAC)
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) provides a tool for children to learn and expand their language, and allows them to communicate their wants and needs with family, friends, and their community.
AAC is often used to support children who have few or no spoken words, as well as those that are difficult to understand and/or often frustrated with trying to communicate.
AAC is often a mixture of spoken language and a variety of the following AAC options
– American Sign Language
– Picture board selection
– Speech generating devices
– Teaching use of gestures, body language, and facial expressions to aid communication
– Communication books
– Letter boards
Our clinic provides specialized services for:
– Selecting the AAC device best suited to the child
– Helping families through the process of device funding
– Direct teaching children how to access their device, how to navigate folders, and build an understanding of the meaning of language communicated with the device
– Step-by-Step teaching provided to parents, family members, and community members on how to program and utilize the device
– Device/program customization for each child’s unique needs
Reports from people using AAC indicate that they experience:
– More frequent social interactions
– Increased independence
– More respect from others
– Greater participation in their family lives and communities
– Improved personal safety
– Improved physical and mental health
